In the southeast region, we are fortunate to be able to garden right through the winter. Although many of our favorite plants go dormant just as they do up north, winter's bounty is aplenty. The fallen leaves give way to new vistas that allow us to appreciate hidden treasures…a gnarly vine, papery bark, winter berries.
We never know what winter will bring. Sometimes, it surprises us by slowly sneaking in with higher-than-normal temperatures and bright, sunny days, which fool us into thinking we live in California.
January in Chicago is the bleakest, grayest, slushiest, snowiest, and saddest of months. There is nothing to do, nowhere to go. We’re usually snowed in, or iced in or a funky combination of the two.
As an Atlantic Canadian, whenever I travel out of the country, I’m often asked about igloos and polar bears. Although I can’t say I’ve ever seen a polar bear in my backyard (I live in zone 5b for goodness sake!), we do tend to get our fair share of snow each winter.
