Flowers Having a Ball
When planting in the ground is way too easy, using containers is far too normal and still you need something with some serious VAVAVOOM, why not make a ball o' color to hang from a tree, from shepherd hook or sit on the ground? Or better yet, make 6! It's not the easiest thing to make, but it's completely cool and your neighbors will be like, 'WHAA?"
All you need to start is a hanging wire topiary form, easily accessed with a Google search and a Visa card. You could also make a form with armature wire if you are feelin' crafty. Once you're in possession of one of these super handy forms, get to planting! Just start stuffing plants in the form, using soaking wet sphagnum moss to fill holes and keep things in place. This is messy work and the finished product isn't absolutely gorgeous just yet. It needs to fill in just a little, then you'll be good to go. As these plants don't have much in the way of shelter for their roots and the wind is always at them, make sure to keep them adequately moist.
OR, if you're a megalomaniac, you can make a HAY-UGE form by using 2 store-bought metal hanging baskets with the coco-liners and zip tying them together. Whether you fill this mostly with soil or use a ton of sphagnum, it's going to be too heavy to hang in a tree, but looks killer sitting anywhere in the garden
What plants work well for a flower ball? Try anything that trails but doesn't have too big of a flower. If they start losing the shape, I like to do a quick tie-around with some fishing line (but rubber bands work, too) and snip off anything that still hangs around after that.
